Latin American music can be very diverse, but let's stick to the mainstream genre. Reggaeton is a genre of Spanish music with Latin American, Caribbean, and hip hop influences which usually involves rapping and singing. The famous reggaeton artists as of right now are, Luis Fonsi, Bad Bunny, Daddy Yankee, Becky G, etc. In Latin America this is party music/mainstream music. But how is it becoming a thing in the US, and outside of Latin America?

How did this music genre made its way to the US? Well, the answer is: Gasolina by Daddy Yankee. This song is what started most of it, Despacito is merely the successor. Despacito by Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee came out April 2017, but it was until mid summer that year that it became a hit in the US and Justin Bieber was featured in the English version. Despacito is the most viewed video on youtube, and it is the best-selling latin single in the US. It didn't only did great in America but also in some countries in Europe. This opened the door to more reggaeton artists into the US music industry. Many latino artists have started to collab and feature US artist: i.e Luis Fonsi has collabed with Demi Lovato, J Balvin collabed with Beyonce, Bad Bunny featured Drake on one of his songs. These US artists are not only featured but are singing in Spanish for a couple of lines or even a full verse making it more of a phenomenon; as well as the fact that the Latin American and Caribbean influences are not gone at all.

So basically Despacito changed how reggaeton is viewed and opened the door to Latin American influences in music. Love it or hate it, it changed the game for latino artists and it's starting to show. What could this mean for latino artists? Well it could mean that in the next couple of years we see an increase in Latin American artists, and an increase in Spanish music being sold outside of Latino America. It could also be nothing more than a trend that might just die off in the next couple of years, but it's definitely something that as a latino artist is very interesting to see.
