Review: Sing to Me Instead-Ben Platt

Writer's picture: lunathieflunathief

Everyone should go listen to Ben Platt's new album because this man is amazingly talented and deserves to be recognized

Ben Platt released his debut album March 29th 2019, and boy do I love it. I first heard this man's magical vocals in the Dear Evan Hansen musical soundtrack. I'm so glad he's exploring and discovering himself and I just can't wait for more of his music. But now lets go into this album

Bad Habit

The opening song for this amazing album. This song is about going back to old habits, let that be a person or what-not. You know its wrong to go back but you find comfort there and it's sometimes all you need--even if its not right for you

Been one of those days sun don't wanna come out/ Can you help me out?/ Can I lean on you?

Ease my Mind

There are certain people that make things calmer, and it makes it feel like everything is better. Unlike the previous song this person Ben Platt is singing to brings him peace of mind.

You came out of nowhere and you cut through all the noise/ I make sense of the madness when I listen to your voice

Temporary Love

This song is reassuring the other person that this love is gonna last, and that they are both in it together. I instantly fell in love with this song; everything from Ben Platt's vocals, to the beautiful lyrics....its just so amazing.

We don't have to hide our love away/ And both of us are gonna make mistakes/ 'Cause leaning on somebody's never easy

Grow As We Go

This is, in my opinion, one of the saddest songs in the album. For me it's about asking someone to stay and grow together, but they don't feel like they can do that.

I don't know how this river runs, but I'd like the company through every twist and turn

Honest Man

As more of this album came out, Ben Platt started to come out himself. He opened up about his sexuality and he also does that in this particular song. He sings about loving someone that is still hasn't come out and has to hide their relationship

Why can't you take my hand?/ I'm not what you planned but,/ I'm a safe place to land./ I am an honest man

Hurt Me Once

This another of those sad songs in the album---there are quite a few of those. It has the "if you love something let it go" type of vibe. You aren't connected to this person and you are no longer a match so it hurts more to stay together rather than apart.

If you have to hurt me, hurt me once./ If you have to end it, get it done

New

New is that unapologetic breakup song and I am in love with it. Ben Platt's falsetto in the "new's" in the chorus give me live and thats all that matters.

Never going back, never going back to that heartsick little lover boy who went and lost himself in you

Better

I don't have much to say about this song other than I love his vocals in the chorus. This song is about losing someone and feeling like you've lost a part of yourself and not knowing how to go on.

I'm not good at pretending that I'm happy to be alone./ Part of me is a question, can't answer it on my own./ 'Cause I lost part of me when I lost all of you, now I'm lost

Share Your Address

This is a quirky, fun, slightly creepy love song. It's about moving too fast, but feeling like it's right. The lyrics are over-exaggerated which makes it such a fun upbeat song.

Darling, you might think it's too soon but I can't get you out of my head now

In Case You Don't Live Forever

This song has a feeling of legacy and family. Following their steps and having a better life because of those people you look up to.

In case you don’t live forever, let me tell you now/ I love you more than you'll ever wrap your head around

Older

I feel like this song hit me very hard when I read the lyrics along with it. I often feel like I'm running out of time and worrying about that instead of living.

When you are younger, you'll wish you're older/ Then when you're older, you'll wish for time to turn around

Run Away

This song feel like a lullaby to me; a bed time story. It's such a nice ending to this album and I feel like it closes it perfectly. It's so reassuring and calm.

I may not be wise/ And I won't save the day/ But look in my eyes/ And know I'll always stay./ And I won't run away

This album is definitely amazing, and I can't wait to see what other things will this amazing man release.
